Governor Wike Cancels Covid-19 Lockdown

The lockdown imposed in Rivers state to curb the spread of coronavirus has been canceled by Governor Nyesom Wike.

This was made known in a state broadcast by Wike earlier today, as he stated that no part of Rivers state will be under lockdown from May 26.

The governor also revealed that all land borders will remain closed, and that anyone seen without a face mask will be arrested.

“In the last two months we have implemented several calculated measures in response to the outbreak of the coronavirus in our State.

Some of these measures were severe, but necessary, including the total lockdown of Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas, which are, without doubt, the social and economic never-centers of our State.

Arguably, these measures and your sacrifices have enabled us so far, to contain and limit the spread of this virus to 4 out of the 23 local government areas of the State.

We are totally in control, working hard every day and believing that the worst will soon be behind us.

In continuation of our struggle against the spread of covid-19 in our State, we had planned to resume the total lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas from Wednesday 27th May 2020.

However, after a comprehensive review of the measures we have taken and further considerations placed before us by well-meaning members of the public, the State Security Council has decided to cancel the proposed lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas of the State.

In essence, no part of Rivers State is or will be under any lockdown from this moment and this will be so, except where it becomes necessary again.

All land borders, including all exit and entry routes into Rivers State shall remain closed to human and vehicular traffic, except those on essential services and duly exempted.

All residents must wear face masks or covering into any public space, including our roads, banks, shopping malls, shops, hotels and in any lawful social gathering.”

A Housewife In Police Custody For Allegedly Stabbing Husband To Death

The Delta State Police Command arrested a woman who allegedly stabbed her husband to death in his sleep.

Mr. Uzougbo Iwebunor – The deceased , was killed on May 15, in Issele-Uku, Aniocha North LGA of the state.

The spokesperson of the police command, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, told journalists in Asaba, that the suspect was in police custody.

“I can confirm that we have the woman in custody over the death of her husband. “However, we don’t know what actually happened that caused the death of the husband.

“The police have commenced an investigation into the matter with a view to unraveling the circumstances surrounding the case,” Onovwakpoyeya said.

However, a brother to the deceased, Mr Henry Iwebunor, alleged that his brother was stabbed to death by the wife while asleep.

He said ;

“On the fateful day, my brother had gone to bed with his wife, however, I was surprised to get a call that my brother has died in the night. “When I asked his wife what went wrong, she told me that my brother suddenly woke up at midnight and hit his head on the edge of their iron bed and slumped.

“However, there is evidence that my brother was stabbed to death because there is a stab wound between his shoulders and the left side of his neck. “Before this incident, the wife has been at loggerhead with my brother over his refusal to write his will. “She has been forcing my brother to write his will, a development that had caused so much quarrel in the family,” Iwebunor alleged.

Lampard Says He Can Make Me A Chelsea Star – Kovacic

Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic believes he is working with the perfect manager in Frank Lampard to add the qualities to his game that he is currently missing.

The most notable of those is the art of goal-scoring, with the Croatia international hardly renowned for his prowess in the final third of the field. The 26-year-old failed to find the target during a season-long loan at Stamford Bridge in 2018-19, but still did enough to earn a permanent move from Real Madrid .

He is now off the mark for the Blues, with two efforts recorded this term, but has only troubled the scorers on 21 occasions in his 367 club appearances to date.

Kovacic can argue that he is not selected to provide that kind of threat, with his value found in ball-winning and ball-playing departments. He is, however, eager to make himself a more rounded performer and feels that Lampard – who scored 211 goals for Chelsea – could be the man to unlock further potential.

Kovacic said in an Instagram Live discussion, on seeing the new boss arrive in the summer of 2019 and what it could mean for him:

“We had a quite good year under Maurizio Sarri, winning the Europa League, in the end he left and Frank Lampard came to the team.

“I think from the first moment our feeling was good. I liked the way he was training us, really hard training, I liked his character, how he was speaking to the team.

“I think I can learn a lot from him because all the things I am missing from my game – scoring goals and being more direct, this is the thing Lampard was amazing at in his career. So he’s a great manager, a great person and I think I can learn a lot from him during my time here.

Guardiola Begs Fans To Be Safe As Man City Return To Training.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has praised key workers for putting their lives at risk during the Covid-19 pandemic and urged fans to continue staying safe.

The Premier League was shut down more than two months ago by the coronavirus outbreak but it is hoped that football in the top division could restart behind closed doors midway through June.

City’s first-team squad returned to the Etihad Campus last week and Guardiola says the players are keen to return to action when they can do so safely.

“All the fans around the world are waiting for football to come back. We want to come back but now the priority is other things,” he said.

“The message is still stay safe, be careful and when everything is possible we will come back. First I think without [the fans], but hopefully we come back to a routine.

“But now the most important thing is to follow the instructions. If they say use a mask, stay at home, social distance – we have to do it. Because there are many, many people in the NHS, who put their own lives at risk to save ours.

How Ahmed Musa Struggled At Leicester City .

Super Eagles captain and Al Nassr’s forward, Ahmed Musa has revealed that the presence of Algeria winger Riyad Mahrez was the major reason he failed to earn a first-eleven playing berth during his spell at Leicester City.

Musa signed to the English side, Leicester City for a then club-record £16.6 fee in July 2016 from Russian top-flight division club, CSKA Moscow.

The 27-year-old forward scored two goals in 22 league matches during his time with the Foxes.

However, after struggling for game time at the club, the management saw it fit to loan him back to CSKA Moscow in January 2018.

Musa finally left Leicester for Saudi Arabia Professional League club Al Nassr in August 2018.

“Before they signed me at Leicester City, they told me Riyad Mahrez was leaving,” Musa said on Instagram Live while speaking to SuperSport TV’s Carol Tshabalala.

“If I knew that Mahrez is going to stay, I will not join Leicester, I would have stayed at CSKA Moscow.

At Plateau Isolation Centre, Nurses Withdraws Services

Nurses at the the Jos University Teaching Hospital, on Monday withdrew their services.

It was learnt that as a result of the development, all the nineteen patients at the isolation centre have been abandoned.

Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, JUTH branch, Mrs. Mercy Lenka, who confirmed the development to our correspondent in Jos on Monday blamed the government for their action stating that they were constrained to withdraw their services at the isolation centre in order to save the lives of their members and others from being infected with the disease.

Mercy Lenka said:

“It is true , we have asked our members to withdraw their services at the JUTH isolation center. Ideally, when a person is involved in the treatment of confirmed cases of COVID-19, he or she is not supposed to go back home and mingle with their family members or anyone else.

“They are supposed to go to a hotel or any other accommodation that the management, the state or federal government would have made provision for. They go there and stay while doing their work. When they are done, they are expected to stay back for two weeks and samples would be taken which must be confirmed negative before they will be allowed to go back to their family members.

“This has never been provided for our members in JUTH. Besides, nobody has given any stipend, incentive, or hazard allowance to the nurses who have been risking their lives while treating the patients. Already, one of the nurses tested positive for the diseases about two days ago, and yet, they did not see the need to attend to our demands because they still allow the nurses to go back home after work.

“We have done everything to get the attention of the government in addressing these issues without success. Considering the danger this practice poses to the lives of the nurses, their families, and other individuals, we decided to ask them to withdraw their services until these issues are addressed.”

But the State Government, in returned condemned the action of the nurses.

Commissioner for Health, Dr Ninkong Lar Ndam, said that the concerns raised by the nurses were being addressed by the government and wondered why they would still go ahead to withdraw their services.

The Commissioner said:

“Why would you leave somebody that is very sick as a nurse. If they have issues, they would have discussed it with us. There was no much negotiation and they went ahead to withdraw their services because as a government, we have not neglected anybody in Plateau State in addressing the COVID-19 challenge.

“As a matter of fact, we have been working very hard to ensure that we provide them with accommodation which they complained about. In fact, over the weekend, we got accommodation for them at the NDLEA camp near Rikkos but we have to decontaminate the place and make the necessary repairs before they can move in and we are hoping that by tomorrow, it should be ready for use. Meanwhile, we have mobilized doctors to the isolation centre to see how we will continue to attend to the patients.”

In Cross River , three chiefs and some women were set ablaze over allegations of witchcraft

Three Chiefs and others have been burnt in Oku community, Boki Local Government Area, Cross River State over allegations of witchcraft.

It was recorded that among those that were burnt was Chief Benard Kekong who was former manager in Boki Oil Palm Estate in Borum. He died an hour after he was set ablaze.

Others include Edward Kekong and John Otu who were said to be gasping for breath while several others, mostly women, were allegedly inflicted with severe burns.

The victims were accused of being witches and wizards in the Oku community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.

A source in the community said the attack on the victims was allegedly spearheaded by an aide to Governor Ben Ayade.s political appointee.

“The elderly victims accused of being witches and wizards, were brought out from their homes and burned. Some have died, while others still alive are writhing in pains.

“Those in pains could not get medical treatment anywhere, not even in Okundi, as the dreaded political appointee warned whoever that treated those suffering from burns would suffer the same fate” a source stated.

The source added, “The police in Okundi also could not do anything about the situation because the troublesome political appointee warned them to stay away from Oku.

“Villagers have fled to neighbouring communities on self-exile to avoid being attacked by the man and his boys. Even the clan head, Bernard Nku is also on the run” the source further said.

When contacted, the Permanent Secretary, office of the State Security Adviser, Sir Alfred Mboto, said, “I have been able to reach my SSA (State Security Adviser, Central) and my SSA has been able to make contact there.

“He will give me a full briefing. But what they said was that some youths of the village decided to take on elders claiming that those elders are witches and wizards and one of the youths was using a mirror to show them who to attack.

“But it is true that some properties have been destroyed. I want to get the raw facts because some people are even telling me that some people have been killed. We have to send our security informants to get the right information.

“However, if that happened, I have set in motion plans to arrest those who carried out the act, alongside the person who carried the mirror.”

The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo did not respond to calls and a text message sent to her mobile line after several attempts to reach her.
